"you've got pulleys and a lever... someTHINGS's gotta give!"

This was an old anglophone driver explaining the idiom that forms the title of the new Jack Nicolson movie to a non-native speaker.

(The response, Abott & Costello-like, was: "What?!? What has got to give!?!" which then was repeated ad nauseum for the rest of my break. I need to quit my job. I need to quit my job.)
